Socio-Spatial Economics: Smarter Furniture

So this was the first major piece of furniture I designed for myself in 2000-2001. I had just moved back to a 325 sf apartment in Brooklyn New York. The room's saving graces were that I had a separate kitchen (even though it was probably a closet in another lifetime), and a fabulous view of the Brooklyn Waterfront, including the Statue of Liberty. I was determined to make the space work for me.

So I started looking online for space-saving furniture solutions that would allow me to work from home comfortably. The selections were very underwhelming. So for nine months, I worked on my floor, until I found someone who could make what I needed.

The 'loveseat' is what I usually call it, since the dimensions of comfortable two-person sitting was one of the final guidelines that determined the size of the overall piece.

So far, it has put in over seven years of great service, and has moved from my home in Brooklyn to my first office in Soho, and then to my now studio/storefront in Boreum Hill aka BoCoCa (I know~!). I can't wait to get back to this project, because there are several unbuilt variations waiting to make their debut.
